You do not need to provide buttonholes for all your guests, though of course, if you want a unified floral theme for everyone attending your wedding, and your budget allows, then you can. Buttonholes will usually be provided for the fathers of the bride and groom, the best man, the ushers, the pageboy and of course, the groom himself. Corsages are normally chosen for close female relatives of the bride and groom and if you wish to provide flowers for other female guests then you can provide them with a buttonhole to wear on their right lapel. For gentlemen, the buttonhole is worn on the left lapel.
Buttonholes can be as simple as a single flower with a little foliage or can be elaborate with the addition of other flowers and ornamentation, included to create a unique design. A boutonniere is made from several small flowers and is worn on the lapel in the same way as a buttonhole. The flowers are usually of the same type and, for the groom, could be flowers that are included in the bride’s bouquet. Although traditionally the groom, the best man and the fathers of the bride and groom would wear a double bloom buttonhole, many couples choose other options for them. They may still choose a more lavish buttonhole or incorporate different coloured flower(s) for these important members of the wedding party though in order to mark them out from the rest of the guests.
Just as when choosing your bouquet and other flowers, different flowers and colours will convey different themes and moods, so for example if you want a funky image for your wedding, bright oranges and lipstick pinks could be used or for a tropical theme you might wear Phalaenopsis orchids instead.
When choosing flowers for your buttonhole or boutonniere it is important to consider how well the flowers will last, particularly on hot summer days or in well-heated venues. Additionally, consider the ‘hug factor’ – as guests greet and congratulate the groom and principal members of the wedding party flowers can be crushed; robust flowers are more likely to survive through the whole day!
Whatever your budget, Sacre Fleur can provide you with beautiful buttonholes for your special day.In our gallery below we have included a selection of buttonholes and boutonniers. However, we can create designs to fit the theme or mood you wish to convey or your chosen colour scheme.
